A proper AC service covers both units: the filters, cooling coil, blower and drain line inside, and the condenser coil and fan outside. It should end with a gas pressure reading and a cooling test, and for one split AC it takes about 45 minutes to an hour. If the technician only washes the filters and leaves, you have paid for a filter wash, not a service.
This guide walks through what each step involves, why it matters in a humid, dusty place like Navi Mumbai, and how to tell whether your AC needs a service, a deeper jet clean or an actual repair. Keep it handy the next time a technician is at your door.
Why ACs in Navi Mumbai need servicing more often
Ulwe, Dronagiri, Kharghar and the other nodes near the creek have three things that are hard on air conditioners: high humidity for most of the year, salt in the air, and dust from ongoing construction. Humidity keeps the indoor coil and drain tray wet, which is how mould and the “wet sock” smell start. Salt slowly corrodes the outdoor coil. Dust settles on both coils and on the blower wheel, so less air passes through and the compressor has to run longer.
Most homes here also use the AC for many months of the year. Put together, that is why a once-a-year service, which may be enough in a drier city, usually is not enough here.
The AC service checklist
Use this as a checklist while the technician works. Each item is something you can see being done.
1. Filters removed, washed and dried
The mesh filters behind the front panel catch most of the dust. They should be washed with water, dried and put back. You can do this yourself every two to three weeks between services.
2. Indoor coil and blower cleaned with water
This is the step that separates a real service from a quick one. The technician covers the area below the indoor unit with a service bag, then sprays water through the cooling coil and over the blower wheel. Dirty water should be visible in the bag. A dry wipe of the front panel does not count.
3. Drain tray and drain pipe flushed
Water from the coil collects in a tray and leaves through a thin pipe. When dust and algae block it, water starts dripping from the indoor unit onto your wall. Flushing the line during the service prevents this.
4. Outdoor unit cleaned
The condenser coil outside throws out the heat taken from your room. If it is covered in dust or leaves, the AC cools poorly and uses more electricity. The technician should clean it with water and check that the fan spins freely.
5. Gas pressure checked
A gauge is connected to the service valve on the outdoor unit to read the refrigerant pressure. This is a check, not a refill. If the pressure is low, it means gas has leaked from somewhere, and that leak has to be found and fixed before any gas is added. Our guide to AC gas filling explains why.
6. Electrical check
Loose connections and a weakening capacitor are common causes of an AC that starts and stops, or an outdoor unit that does not start at all. A quick look at the wiring and the capacitor saves a repeat visit.
7. Cooling test
At the end, the AC is run for a few minutes and the air temperature at the vents is measured. You should feel clearly cold air, and the technician should be able to tell you the reading.
Normal service, jet service or full dismantle: which one?
Not every AC needs the same level of cleaning. Here is a simple way to decide.
| Type | What it cleans | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Normal (wet) service | Filters, coil surface, blower, drain, outdoor unit | The AC is serviced regularly and cooling is fine |
| Jet service | Deep inside the coil and blower wheel with a high-pressure pump | There is a smell, or airflow is weak even after a normal service |
| Full dismantle jet service | Indoor unit taken down; every part washed | Black dust or water is coming out, or the AC has not been cleaned in a long time |
If you are unsure, start with a normal service. A good technician will tell you if the coil or blower needs a deeper jet or full dismantle clean.
How often should you service your AC?
- Daily use (most homes in summer): every 3 to 4 months.
- Light use: at least twice a year.
- Best timing: just before summer (February to March) and just after the monsoon (around October).
- Shops, clinics and restaurants: every 2 to 3 months, because the AC runs longer and handles more heat and dust.
Signs you need a repair, not a service
Cleaning will not fix every problem. Call for a repair visit instead if you notice any of these:
- Ice on the indoor coil or the copper pipes
- A burning smell, rather than a musty one
- The MCB tripping again and again
- Cooling that stops within minutes of starting
- Oil stains near the pipe joints, which usually point to a gas leak
- An error code on the display of an inverter AC
These need diagnosis, not just cleaning. See what an AC repair visit covers.
Quick questions
Does an AC service include gas refilling?
No. A service includes a gas pressure check. Gas is only added after the leak is found and repaired, and that is a separate job.
How long does an AC service take?
About 45 minutes to an hour for one split AC. A jet service takes longer, and a full dismantle service takes the longest because the indoor unit is removed and refitted.
Can I service my AC myself?
You can and should wash the filters yourself. The coil, blower, drain line and outdoor unit need proper tools and care around the electrical parts, so leave those to a technician.
Will a service reduce my electricity bill?
A dirty AC runs longer to reach the set temperature, so cleaning the coils and filters usually brings power use back to normal. How much you save depends on how dirty the AC was.
