Your AC is running, the fan is blowing, but the room just won’t cool down. Before you assume the worst, here are the seven most common reasons, and what you can safely check yourself.
1. Dirty air filters
This is the number one cause. Clogged filters block airflow and reduce cooling. Open the front panel, slide out the filters, wash them with plain water and let them dry fully before refitting.
2. Wrong settings or remote issues
Check that the AC is in Cool mode (not Fan or Dry) and set to 24°C or lower. Replace the remote batteries if the display is faint.
3. Dirty outdoor unit
The outdoor unit releases heat. If it’s covered in dust, leaves or blocked by boxes, cooling drops sharply. Make sure there is space around it.
4. Low refrigerant (gas)
If there is ice on the copper pipes or the air feels only slightly cool, the gas may be low, which means there is a leak. A technician should find and fix the leak before refilling gas.
5. Faulty capacitor
If the outdoor fan runs but the compressor hums without starting, a failed capacitor is a common culprit. It’s an inexpensive part but should be replaced by a trained technician.
6. PCB or sensor problems
Inverter ACs rely on sensors and a circuit board. Error codes on the display usually point to these. Many boards can be repaired at chip level. See our PCB and compressor repair service.
7. AC too small for the room
A 1-ton AC in a large, sun-facing room will struggle in May. If your AC has always cooled poorly, the capacity may simply be too low for the room.
When to call a technician
