Bought a new split AC? The installation matters as much as the brand. A rushed installation can cause water leaks, noise, gas loss and poor cooling for years. Use this checklist before the technician leaves.
1. Indoor unit height and level
The indoor unit should be about 7 to 8 feet from the floor and perfectly level, with a slight tilt towards the drain side so water flows out properly.
2. Outdoor unit on a strong stand
The outdoor unit should sit on a sturdy, rust-proof stand or bracket with enough space around it for airflow, away from direct afternoon sun where possible.
3. Short, neat copper piping
Shorter piping means better efficiency. Pipes should be properly insulated and have no sharp bends or kinks.
4. Vacuuming was done
Always ask whether the lines were vacuumed. Vacuuming removes air and moisture from the pipes. Skipping it reduces cooling and can damage the compressor.
5. Leak test
The technician should check all flare joints for leaks before handing over.
6. Proper drain pipe
The drain pipe should slope downwards all the way and not drip on a neighbour’s balcony or your wall.
7. Correct electrical connection
Use a dedicated socket or MCB of the right rating. A stabiliser is recommended in areas with frequent voltage fluctuation.
8. Trial run
Before paying, run the AC for 10 to 15 minutes. Check the cooling, listen for unusual noise and make sure no water drips from the indoor unit.
